About

I have been photographing and using a darkroom since I was 13. In college I studied with Bill Arnold and David Batchelder, who opened my world to the Zone System and the possibilities of a compelling photo and a beautiful print. Though my career was not in Photography, I never stopped photographing. I took classes with Amy Arbus, Harvey Stein, Lester Lefkowitz and Craig Stevens. I also completed a 6-month mentorship with Alisson Shaw.

“Beach Finds” is a series of photographs of objects found on Martha’s Vineyard beaches. They are isolated in a black background to focus the viewer on details of the object. All the objects have been battered by the sea. These photographs seek to show beauty of that ocean wear, and in some, conjure the presence of other images in the objects.

“Altered Visions” are Photoshoped collages of the world as I see it. Most of these images started with a Photo, and then a process of remembering other images which I felt needed to be there. Some like the “Stone Wall Spirits” I previsualized when I originally took the photo, others like “quarantine takes you strange places” grew organically in a process I can’t quite explain, other than feeling like those objects belonged there. After the fact, I can generally make sense of why these images were constructed.

“Self Portraits” were done for a Portraiture class taught by Amy Arbus at the ICP in New York.

“Everything Else” is a misnomer. It is other things since I went digital. Converting my 35mm and 2&1/4 black and white negatives to digital images, is a project for another day.
